The Canada Foundation for Innovation handed out $1.3 million in new funding Monday to six University of Ottawa
researchers.

The funding will support ongoing research in a range of areas, including multimedia, obesity, HIV and molecular
biology.

"This funding will help six of our most promising young researchers to pursue their goals," university rector Gilles
Patry said in a statement.

The latest researchers to receive funding are:

* Dr. Antonio Colavita ($200,000) for his study of a microscopic worm to better understand the development of
Parkinson's Disease

* Dr. John Copeland ($199,620), of the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, for research into how genes
express themselves in mammalian development.

* Dr. Jim Dimitroulakos ($200,000) for his efforts to develop new types of cancer treatment from the latest
breakthroughs in molecular biology and biopharmaceuticals.

* Adulmotaleb El-Saddik, PhD ($353,715) to study ways of preventing breaches of computer security.

* Qiao Li, PhD ($200,000) who is carrying out gene research to develop new treatments for infertility, diabetes,
vascular disease, obesity, and hormone disorders.

* Dr. Paul MacPherson ($200,000), who is researching just how the HIV virus weakens and destroys the functioning of the
immune system.

In March, the foundation provided $7.72 million in funding to U of O for its Centre for Catalysis Research and
Innovation to research ways to reduce the harmful effects of common chemicals on humans and the environment.

In 2003, the university received more than $150 million in research funding.
