UK: AM Calls For More Nurse Specialists

Apr 28 2004
Daily Post

A NORTH Wales AM has highlighted the need for more nurse specialists during Parkinson's Disease Week.

Janet Ryder, Plaid Cymru National Assembly Member for North Wales, met the only Parkinson's Disease nurse specialist in
North Wales last week.

They discussed the benefits of a specialist nurse working in the community and the hospital.

Parkinson's Disease nurse specialist Sally Roberts is based at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd and covers Denbighshire and Conwy. Ms
Ryder has been calling for more specialised nurses, in particular at Wrexham Maelor Hospital and at Ysbyty Gwynedd.

Following the meeting, Ms Ryder said: "In Ysbyty Glan Clwyd we are lucky to have a consultant geriatrician who has a
special interest in Parkinson's Disease and he has led the development of the service. The work that Sally Roberts does
is invaluable and it would be marvellous to have this kind of work replicated across North Wales."

Sally Roberts added: "We should strive towards equal access to services for people living with Parkinson's Disease."
