Celling America Short
Aired: Wednesday, March 10, 2004

As the federally-approved supply of embryonic stem cells shrinks, private universities and even states are jumping in to make up the difference. But without government funding, these efforts may not pay off, leaving the life-saving promise of the research -- therapies for genetic maladies like Parkinson's and Lou Gehrig's disease -- unrealized.

Guests include:

Dr. Irv Weissman, director of the Institute of Cancer and Stem Cell Biology and Medicine at Stanford University and chair of the National Academy of Science Panel on Human Reproductive Cloning and Stem Cell Research

Nicholas Wade, science reporter for the New York Times and author of "Life Script: How the Human Genome Discoveries Will Transform Medicine and Enhance Your Health"

Dr. James Battey, Chair of the National Institutes of Health Stem Cell Task Force
