Liz Taylor's 'Welsh grave' plan

Sep 6 2004

THE family of movie star Richard Burton has backed plans by Elizabeth Taylor to be
buried next to her former husband - in his birthplace in the Welsh village of
Pontrhydyfen.

Hard drinking Burton, who died in 1984, was laid to rest in Celigny, Switzerland
where he had a mountain retreat.

But while he was married to Elizabeth Taylor the pair purchased burial plots in
Pontrhydyfen's Jerusalem Cemetery, next to Burton's parents, outside Port Talbot.

Wheelchair-bound Taylor, now suffering from Parkinson's Disease, has told friends
she wants to be buried next to Burton in Wales.

She has given instructions for Burton's body to be moved from Switzerland to the
plot in Pontrhydyfen.

But some of the actress's advisers have become concerned about her latest wishes.

One said, "It may be difficult to get things changed, given her illness, and she
sometimes talks about Richard Burton as if he was still alive."

But one possible obstacle to any exhumation and re-burial has already been
removed because a number of Richard Burton's family members have given their
permission for the move.

The actor's niece, former Pobl y Cwm actress Sian Owen said, "The plots are still
there and if Liz wants to rest there then she can. She was always the love of his life.

"Even when he was married to other women he telephoned her every day without
fail.

"We would love to see his remains brought home to Pontrhydyfen. But his widow,
Sally, has overall control of the body, not us."

She added, "He told me it was where he wanted to be buried."
