CRA Revokes Registered Charity Status of the Parkinson’s Support and Research Society OTTAWA, September 2, 2004…The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has revoked the registered charitable status of the Parkinson’s Support and Research Society. The revocation came into effect on August 28, 2004 by way of a notice in the Canada Gazette. http://canadagazette.gc.ca/partI/2004/20040828/html/commis-e.html#i2 It is important not to confuse the Parkinson’s Support and Research Society (Charitable Registration Number 893663716RR0001) with the similarly named Parkinson Society Canada (Charitable Registration Number 108091786RR0001). The Parkinson Society Canada continues to enjoy the benefits of registered charity status. The CRA found that the Parkinson’s Support and Research Society was not complying with the rules as set out in the Income Tax Act for the following reasons: it was not devoting enough of its resources to charitable activities; it had unsubstantiated expenses; and directors had received personal benefits. These problems and other concerns were raised with the Parkinson’s Support and Research Society and were not rectified. As a consequence, the CRA revoked the Parkinson’s Support and Research Society’s charitable status. Because it is no longer a Canadian registered charity, the Parkinson’s Support and Research Society can no longer issue official donation receipts. It has one year in which to properly dispose of its assets, such as making gifts to registered charities. After that it is liable for a 100% tax equal to the value of any remaining assets. The vast majority of Canadian registered charities operate within rules set out in the Income Tax Act. However, when an organization is not complying with these rules and so harming public trust in charities, the CRA will take action. The CRA reminds Canadians to find out about an organization before they donate. Is it a registered charity? How much of its funds are spent on charitable work? What kinds of charitable work does it perform?
