Hi Carol, I had mine four years ago and I think you want at least a week. I had absolutely no pain in my head, but my legs ached badly before surgery and I ended up with lymphodema. I overcame this problem by renting leg pumps. I put them on three times a day and in a few months, I finally had decent legs. Everybody is different. The one thing nobody told me ahead of time was to anticipate your whole body swelling - arms, face, etc.. You need to rest and relax as much as possible. My surgery was done in Philadelphia - both sides the same day. I wasn't able to decrease my medications after surgery, but I would do it again if necessary because it totally took away the pain in my right foot (dystonia) and took away the dyskenesias. The surgery is a positive step. Best wishes.
