Hi Carol,
    I had mine four years ago and I think you want at least a week.  I had
absolutely no pain in my head, but my legs ached badly before surgery and I
ended up with lymphodema. I overcame this problem by renting leg pumps.  I
put them on three times a day and in  a few months, I finally had decent
legs.  Everybody is different.  The one thing nobody told me ahead of time
was to anticipate your whole body swelling - arms, face, etc..  You need to
rest and relax as much as possible.  My surgery was done in Philadelphia -
both sides the same day. I  wasn't able to decrease my medications after
surgery, but I would do it again if necessary because it totally took away
the pain in my right foot (dystonia) and took away the dyskenesias.  The
surgery is a positive step.  Best wishes.  Paula from PA
