Michael J. Fox Returns To TV -- In Campaign Ad POSTED: 12:05 pm EDT October 7, 2004 NEW YORK -- Michael J. Fox is back on TV -- in an ad for John Kerry. Fox appears in a TV commercial praising the Democratic presidential candidate for his stance on stem cell research. The ad was filmed after a campaign appearance with Kerry earlier this week in New Hampshire. "John Kerry strongly supports stem cell research. George Bush is putting limits on it," Fox says in an ad Kerry's campaign unveiled Thursday. "Stem cell research can help millions of Americans whose lives have been touched by devastating illnesses. George Bush says we can wait. I say lives are at stake and it's time for leadership. That's why I support John Kerry for president." The campaign said it will run the ad in local markets in battleground states. Fox suffers from Parkinson's disease and has been a prominent voice in the stem cell debate. At a rally for Kerry in New Hampshire, Fox said the restrictions President George W. Bush has put on stem cell research equates to the president giving disease sufferers a car with no gas -- so all it can do is sit. And, Fox said, the president then congratulated himself for giving sufferers the car. Fox said tens of millions of Americans suffer from incurable diseases, such as diabetes, Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease . And he said stem cell research offers "hope of a cure." Many scientists believe stem cells hold promise for treating diseases including Parkinson's disease. Kerry is promising to fund more embryonic stem cell research with federal money if he's elected. Kerry has said that it's time Americans had a president who thinks the way they do about stem cell research. Earlier this week, the Democratic presidential nominee accused Bush of being close-minded on the issue, saying Bush is "stubborn, he's out of touch, he's unwilling to change." Kerry said Bush has chosen "to sacrifice science for right wing ideology." He's promising $100 million a year for stem cell research and strict ethical oversight. Bush administration policy bans federal funding for research on embryonic stem cell lines created after Aug. 9, 2001.
