McGill has never tested widely for English proficiency. The Faculty of Education, as of this year, will require pre-service teachers to pass an English proficiency test before graduating. Faculties such as Social Work that grant professional degrees, test for French competence, not English. Most faculties require students to complete one communications-in-the-discipline course before graduating. The Faculty of Management requires two communications courses--one "academic" early in the program; one "professional" in the final year. (Some students enter with advanced standing or do well enough on a placement test to bypass the first course.) The Writing Centre at the Faculty of Education provides these Communications courses, both day and evening, campus wide, and also provides tutoring for students who need to improve their English writing skills.
