Dear CASLL colleagues:

You just saw an ad for a one-year maternity-leave position at U of T,
Scarborough, and the ad below is for another position in the same
writing centre. It overlaps in time and is congruent with the mat-leave
position. This one is a career position -- in other words, the
successful candidate will be helped to prepare for the fifth-year review
for promotion to Senior Lecturer, which is a continuing appointment
equivalent to tenure.

The ad outlines an exciting range of functions for this job, and the
UTSC website shows what a dynamic place the Writing Centre there is:
see http://tls.utsc.utoronto.ca/TWC/index.htm.

Note that Teresa Dawson invites inquiries about both these positions.
She's available at [log in to unmask] and (416) 287-7680.

Regards,

Margaret Procter
U of T Coordinator, Writing Support

University of Toronto at Scarborough

Writing Specialist—-UTSC Writing Centre

The UTSC Writing Centre (TWC), part of Teaching and Learning Services
(TLS) at the University of Toronto at Scarborough, invites applications
for a Writing Specialist. The Writing Specialist’s primary
responsibilities will be tutoring students one-on-one, teaching
workshops and seminars on various aspects of academic writing, and
developing instructional materials, all within the context of the UTSC
Writing Centre. The Writing Specialist will also be responsible for
editing Teaching and Learning Services publications, including website
text, and consulting with TLS staff on publication-related matters. The
Writing Specialist will coordinate both the annual UTSC Creative Writing
Awards and a new undergraduate research journal. Both projects involve
working closely with faculty, and the latter offers the opportunity to
mentor students in all aspects of the production of an academic journal.
Additional mentoring opportunities lie in the TA Services program
coordinated by TLS. In addition, the Writing Specialist will work with
other TLS and TWC staff on a range of campus-wide initiatives, including
high school outreach and courses and workshops for incoming students
designed to ease the transition into university.

Qualified candidates will have two separate but related passions:
teaching and writing. When working with students, they will be
stimulating, compassionate teachers, skilled at fostering student
independence. They must be equally comfortable in the classroom and
working with students one-on-one. When working with texts, they will
combine sensitivity to different audiences with meticulous attention to
detail. They must be equally comfortable working with dense academic
texts and with teaching materials designed for a broad audience.

This a full-time position at the rank of Lecturer (For a definition of
the scope of that position at the University of Toronto, see
http://www.provost.utoronto.ca/English/Section-VII.html. The successful
candidate will have a teaching assignment in the Department of
Humanities in a related area (such as Journalism, English, Linguistics,
or Creative Writing) to be determined in consultation with the
department Chair.

Qualifications: PhD in a discipline relevant to the position. Experience
teaching writing at the university level, preferably in the context of a
university writing centre, as well as university classroom teaching
experience, are essential. Professional editing experience essential.
Must enjoy working in teams and in diverse environments.

this position is July 1, 2005. Questions ahead of this deadline are
encouraged and may be directed to [log in to unmask],
