California's $3 billion stem cell proposition passes 11/2/2004 11:45 PM By: Associated Press (SAN FRANCISCO) - Californians have come down on the side of stem cell research by passing a $3 billion bond measure designed to put the state on the cutting edge of such science. Associated Press exit polls show Proposition 71 was popular across all ages, races, incomes and education. It's a rejection of Bush administration policy on stem cell research. However, conservatives weren't alone in their opposition to the measure. Other critics said the bond issue is too expensive for a state already in debt. Still others say that stem cell research as the answer to Parkinson's and other diseases has been oversold. The measure was heavily financed by venture capitalists, who hope to make money from the $300 million that will be awarded each year for a decade.
