AUSTRALIA: Stem Cell Freebie

16nov04

A MELBOURNE biotech company will release an embryonic stem cell line
free to researchers worldwide "for the good of mankind".

The move is hoped to speed up the development of treatments for
diseases such as Parkinson's and diabetes. The line is called Mel 1 --
named after hometown Melbourne -- and is based on a cell that can
grow endless copies of itself in a laboratory.

The cells can then be used to make any kind of cell in the human
body.

It will be freely available to academics and companies around the
world to help fast-track the search for treatments for disease.

The stem cell line was developed by biotech firm Stem Cell Sciences
and Melbourne IVF.
