Even if Prop 71 did deny funding for adult stem cell research, so what? If federal funding for ASCR continues at the 2003 rate of approximately $500M (the numbers are a bit ambiguous on the NIH site), 10 years from now ASCR will have received $5B in funding just from the federal government - ASCR is not a research area that is in need of state assistance.

here is the NIH funding table from which i got the number $500M. there is a key at the bottom that tells us "N/A" indicates that funding data is not available. it is interesting to note that there are only two categories for which data is unavailable: stem cell research and human embryonic stem cell research.

as far as i can tell, institutes at NIH pitch their budgets for the following year in April, which would mean that budgets for these areas would have been pitched in april of 2003 for this year, and april of this year for next year.

So, why do the other 188 research areas have projected budgets for 2004 and 2005, and the two stem cell areas have N/A?

seems a little odd to me.

Ms Meyer states: "And that's not all. Prop 71 denies funding for adult
stem cell research.".

This is just a lie. The Prop 71 amends the California Constitution to
read "There is hereby established a right to conduct stem cell
research which includes research involving adult stem cells...".

Ms Meyer promotes several other lies in her opinion piece, including
her legal conclusion that stem cell research is murder! Apparently,
incinerating unused embryos in a furnace is not murder but using them
for research is, according to her. This is obviously a total
misstatement of the law.

There are legitimate arguments against medical research. However, Ms
Meyer simply chooses to promulgate her propagandistic lies.

We should all ignore lying liars like Ms Meyer.
