Dear colleague, There are a few earlier references, such as in Gratian's Decretum (I, dist. 44, c. 7, ed. Friedberg, p. 158 = pars III de consecratione, dist. 5, c. 35, p. 1422) and in the capitularia of Hincmar of Reims (ed. R. Pokorny and M. Stratmann, MGH Capit. episc. II, 1995, p. 41). These decrees concern priests, who are forbidden to watch shameful games etc. See also Rudolf HIESTAND, 'König Balduin und sein Tanzbär', _Archiv für Kulturgeschichte_, 70 (1988): 343-60, on an episode in the 12th-century kingdom of Jerusalem. Best wishes, Christoph Cluse, Trier
