Raj,
Thanks so much for sharing all these things with all of us. There is
a whole boat-load of things to research and carefully try. Don't
worry. Your disclaimers are taken to heart. I know we need to
progress cautiously.

I already have some of these things in my cupboards. After I finish
this pot of coffee, ;-) I think I'll brew some green tea!

Enjoy!

Subject: My treatment protocol for PD symptoms

> Dear Geof:
> I am getting Ayurvedic medicine from Dr. Panei from
Ahmedabad, India. You can find info on this from the internet by
searching "Dr. Paneri'. His email address: [log in to unmask]
> I am also taking the following in addition to the medicine
from Dr. Paneri.
> I am sharing my personal experience with you. Please do not
take this as professional advice, since I am not a qualified Medical
practitioner. Please do consult a qualified individual before you
start taking any of these items.
> I started adding one by one when my symptoms were beginning
to get worse. Also, I increassed the dose slowly as required.
> These are:
> Acetyl-l-carnitine 3 x 500 mg Most of these have
anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, neuroprotective
and neuroregenerative properties.
> L-carnosine 2 x 500 mg
> Resveratrol 1 x 500 mg or Grape seed extract 1 cap on
alternate days.
> Glutathione - Reduced 1 x 500 mg
> Co E Q 10 3 x 120 mg Protects against PD
> NADH 5 mg Protects against PD
> "Brain Essentials" from Swanson Nutritionals - This is the
most important of all. 3 x 500 mg. Contains various vitamins,
Phosphatidyl serine, anti-oxidants, and a time-tested ayurvedic herb.
> Vit E 400 IU Potent anti-oxidant - reduced to 200IU
recently.
> Multivitamin
> Green Tea Extract Protects against PD. 3 x caps per day.
>
> I am also taking Quercetin 500 mg/day to keep my PSA level down.
> However, in spite of all these, I still developed some shoulder
pain. That is why I started taking Celebrex, which is a non-steroidal
anti-inflammatory drug, just like ibuprophen (makes me fat and
inceases my Blood pressure), aspirin ( I hate taking aspirin on a
daily basis) or tylenol (makes my PSA level go high). I find celebrex
2 x 100 mg a day is suffcient to manage my pain. Celebrex also
helpskeep my PSA level low. (That is why Celebrex 400 mg/day was given
in the clinical trial for cancer patients. It backfired by affecting
the heart)
>
> Since the scare about NSAIDS and heart problems, I have
reduced Celebrex from 200 mg/day to 100 mg/day. I am taking a little
quantity of turmeric with sage tea. I also occasionally use over the
counter Myoflex, a topical application for pain. In my opinion, pain
in PD patients should be treated immediately. Increaed pain causes
secretion of anti-inflammatory cytokines, which are known to aggravate
PD symptoms. I think this is caused by these cytokines crossing the
blood barrier and accelerating the death of neurons. In addition, it
is also known that inflammatory cyokines attract the tissue stem
cells to the inflammatory sites. This in general will retard the
mobility of tissue stem cells from travelling to were they are needed.
inflammation alaso causes production of Cox-2 enzyme, which is
required for the progression of PD. That is why I am concentrating on
relievingmy pain asmuch as I can, without aggravating other vital
smptoms such as ourheart and blood pressu!
> re.
> I am also doing what nobody has tried with great benefit. I
am listening toan audio tape everyday before I sleep. This sound uis
supposed to increase in the alpha and theta waves in our brain, which
is onducie for secretion of endorphins and thelike and help grow our
neurons. I felt teh effect even after one day. The tape is called Mind
Aerobics, obtainable from THE NEW YOU ENTERPRISES, 4720 SW washington,
Suite 104, Beaverton, OR 97005. T: 503 574 3035, F: 503 6433114.
Listening to this tape also induces anti-aging effect, and I find it
gives more more energy on an eveyday basis. In general, I find that
almost all the anti-aging natural biochemicals are good for PD.
>
> You see that almost all my medications are natural biochemicals
and are not synthetic. I think that western medicine is good for
symptomatic relief but when start using them chronically for years on,
our bodyreacts to them unfavourably.
> My aim is to increase the survival conditions of our neurons,
that are dying for unknwon reason. I am hoping that by altering the
microenvironment of our brain cells that will favor their survival, we
increase the chances of the renewal of dead neuron by our own tissue
resident stem cells. Therefore, I am constantly on the look out for
natural compounds, preferably herbal derivatives that would be of help
to me. I start including them in my daily intake, only after thorough
research.

> Also, myentire life style has changed, definitely for the
better. I eat a lot of nuts, almond, walnuts, sunflower seeds,
walnuts, pumpkin seeds (for my prostate), and lots of fruits.I avoid
tamarind, tomato, leukopene, yogurt, cheese, and egg plants. Take lots
of vegetables, blue berries, raspberries, straw berries, beans,
spinach and all other good vegetables. I stopped taking white rice but
included cracked wheat, brown rye bread, a glass of French red wine in
my daiy in take.
> I believe there are natural ways we can definitely retard
progression of PD. But, we have to search for them. No body is going
to do that for us. We the patients are left on our own. Things are not
going to change for better in the near future, due to the current
political atmosphere, which seems inject religious philosophies into
the health issues.
> Wish you all the best.
> Raj
