The First Great History Play in English

The American Theatre of Actors will present Christopher
Marlowe’s
epic drama Edward II. Marlowe’s play, written shortly before the
playwright
was assassinated in 1593 at the age of 29, shows the results of fatal
combination of love and politics. It is considered the first great
history play,
foreshadowing Shakespeare’s kingly dramas.
Maury Miller plays King Edward and Matthieu Cornillon his lover
Gaveston. The cast also includes Joel Bischoff, Michael Boothroyd,
Patrick J.
Egan, Zachary Green, Max Hambleton, Paul Hansen, Laura Ionata, John
Lisanti,
Orville Matherson, Ryan G. Metzger, Jessica Mills, Kevin Sebastian, and
Joshua
Stamell.
Jeff Dailey, who has directed all of Marlowe’s plays, is the
stage
director.
The show runs from March 30 through April 17, 2005, Wednesdays
through Saturdays at 8 PM, with Sunday matinees at 2 PM. The theatre is
located
at 314 West 54th Street, between 8th and 9th Avenues, convenient to the
Columbus Circle station on the A, B, C, D, and 1 subways, and the 57th
Street station
on the N, R, and Q lines. Tickets are $15.00 and may be reserved by
calling
(212) 581-3044.
