It is called proprioception. When you walk, all senses are called upon: sight, 
hearing ( a sudden loud noise may block you, some music may help), feeling...
The feedback from your barefeet is different to the one you get from shoes 
(soles). Same as uneven ground may make walking easier, or steps.
The more feedback you get ( obstacles, colours, etc) the more´ facilitation¨ 
in a proprioceptive way.
