AR-
Yes, the "piece of information " as to why I believe embryonic SCR is OK and others in the church don't (and I am NOT alone in my church) must be IGNORANCE! (And I am using that word descriptively, not judgmentally.) They simply do not understand that we are NOT crushing up 2nd and 3rd trimester fetuses - that the cells we are talking about using are about the size of a pinhead - and this is in NO WAY comparable to partial birth abortion which has been banned - and they don't realize the destiny of IVF stored embryos or the thousands which don't "take" during the invitro process.

Another thing the uneducated "church herd" does not seem to understand is that stem cells (especially autolagous - or from oneself) have been used in research for years, especially in giving cancer patients much needed strangth after chemo and radiation, and SCR will continue to be used in privately-funded institutions. I could go on and on, but I want to suggest that if you have questions about what has occurred historically, what is actually taking place currently, and what advocates are proposing for the future of SCR, visit the Texas site (TAMR http://www.txamr.org/ ). I personally know many of the Christians contributing to that site's information.

Although there is enormous potential for adult stem cells, cordblood stem cells, and a multitude of other sources, embryonic cells have more advantages and should not be totally banned. We need strict laws and guidelines for ESCR - and we need to at least TRY some experimentation with ESC and not be so closed-minded. What if penicillin had been banned because it was the ingesting of a "mold" on bread???
Finally, there will never be a universal church or belief - we may worship the same God, but how we believe is extremely diversified. Why then, should we disregard the wishes of 73% of Americans who approve of SCR?? (Harris Poll, 2004) If it's against your belief, DON'T DO IT! We cannot "throw the baby out with the Petri dish!"

Respectfully,

Peggy

  Hi Peggy

Its great to hear from you. Do you have any insight into why you
believe (embryonic?) stem cell research is OK and others in your
church don't? Is there any piece of information that might make a
  difference to the others?

  Archie
