There is virtually no hydration. Morphine is given to ease discomfort. Hospice studies have shown that death by dehydration is not as uncomfortable as once thought. Apparently, giving a little water is much worse than giving no water at all. As electrolyte imbalance occurs, the body sinks into a semi-comatose state.. I've watched this process many times in Alzheimer's patients who refuse to eat or drink anything.
