EUROPE’S leading stem cell researchers, including a team from Edinburgh
University, are meeting in Italy next week to co-ordinate efforts to find
potentially ground-breaking treatments for brain conditions such as
Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

A 19-strong contingent from the university’s Institute for Stem Cell
Research, which leads the European Stem Cell Consortium (EuroStemCell),
will attend a series of meetings with other experts in the field.

Some 27 research groups from eight European countries, with field-leading
expertise in stem cell biology, transgenesis, developmental biology,
tissue repair, in vivo disease models and clinical cell transplantation,
will also be there.

It is hoped greater co-operation will speed up the process of turning
stem cell technologies into useful treatments.

EuroStemCell’s head, Edinburgh University professor Austin Smith, said:
"EuroStemCell’s collaborative approach allows us compare scientific
developments across different types of stem cells - rather than focusing
on a narrow line of research."
