Learn About the Many Types Clinical Trials

Many people think that clinical trials focus solely on testing new
treatments, such as an experimental drug or a surgical procedure. In
fact, there are a number of clinical trials that do not test new
treatments for PD, but help scientists gain a better understanding of the
disease. Some trials examine genetic or environmental risk factors that
may increase the likelihood of developing Parkinson’s. There are also
trials that examine the effects and management of the disease, such as
speech treatment or the signs and symptoms of swallowing disorders.

TIP: If you want to make a contribution to Parkinson’s research but feel
uncomfortable about trying a new treatment, go to the Browse by Trial
Type page on PDtrials.org.
http://www.pdtrials.org/browse-type.html
Here, trials are listed according to their research objectives. The
Study of Disease category lists trials that do not test new treatments
and may only require you to answer a questionnaire or give a blood
sample.
