To the Editor: As a Parkinson's disease patient, I follow the debate over embryonic stem cell research with particular interest. Medical researchers believe the research could produce major medical breakthroughs, not just for me, but for patients living with a host of other diseases as well. New and effective treatments, and even an eventual cure, could finally be within our reach - for me, and for millions of others in the United States and across the globe. Unfortunately, current government policy ties scientists' hands, and as a result, we are slowing down research just when we should be speeding it up. A bipartisan bill in Congress, HR 810, would expand federal support for embryonic stem cell research. I am living every day with Parkinsson's , and I hope our representatives in Congress will think of people like me when they vote on stem cell research. Polls show that solid majorities of conservatives, moderates, and progressives support such expansion. But more important, it's the right thing to do. Let's hope a majority in Congress sees it that way when the bill comes to a vote. Rayilyn Brown 623-584-5869 18507 N.
