Liz, I'm wondering if your friend has a Living Will??  She might have
decided not to employ extraordinary means when she got to this point in her
disease.

PEG tube placement would be the answer to her problem if she has decided to
live.  She could receive nutritional supplements and hydration through this
tube.    PEG tubes are placed directly into the stomach - something that
becomes necessary when swallowing is no longer possible.

If she desires to let nature take its course, then Hospice will provide all
of the comfort she and her husband require at this time.  Her death will be
peaceful.

Please let us know how your friend does  - I will be praying for you and for
her and her husband.
