Foreign breakthroughs in therapeutic cloning show folly of U.S. restrictions on research funding.

In the future, it's entirely possible that physicians at the Texas Medical Center could be forced to send their desperately ill patients out of the country to take advantage of therapeutic cloning techniques stifled inside the United States by federal funding bans.

The latest breakthroughs in the field announced this week by South Korean researchers indicates that reality could come sooner rather than later. They demonstrated that therapeutic cloning to produce stem cells that genetically match a patient is far easier to accomplish than previously thought. That work advances the timetable for transforming research into practical medical applications.
