NEWSDAY June 14, 2005 No trial drug for them by Jamie Talan "Patients who underwent surgery to have an experimental Parkinson's disease medicine infused into their brains will not have access to the drug now that the drug trial has been halted, a judge ruled last week. The drug, glial cell line- derived neurotropic factor, was in clinical trials when the manufacturer, Amgen, halted testing last August. Two patients, including a Greenlawn man, sued to get the drug, and in a decision dated June 6, U.S. District Judge P. Kevin Castel in Manhattan ruled against them...... .......Doctors involved in the trials said they have seen no harmful signs among the patients, many of whom, like Suthers, reported dramatic improvement, including the ability to walk without stumbling. FDA officials gave the green light for compassionate use, but Amgen had the final decision...."
