I don't know who the major contributors are to the high cost of medical care. We know drugs are expensive, we know that technical gadgets are expensive, we know that doctors fee are high, and we know that hospital fees are unaffordable. But there is an additional unknown ingredient, the insurance companies. In some of the newspaper reports I have seen, the discussion about the insurance companies cited their reluctance to control costs and therefore their growth. It is instructive to take one of the biggest companies and to look at their stock price. Carlines insurance carrier is Aetna (ticker symbol AET). The stock performance for the last 5 years is spectacular (shoulda bought it). So at least some of our money goes there. Indeed in the reports I saw, they were lobbying very strongly against health plans. K. F.
