Fox Asks the Senate To Support Legitimate Stem Cell Research Those who oppose passage in the Senate of the pro-cures stem cell bill, H.R. 810, are fogging the battlefield with a series of so-called "alternatives." These range from unpublished, unproven theories to experiments that have only been conducted with animal cells. These are untested and false theories which are years, perhaps decades away from producing human embryonic stem cells. Scientists have already discovered a way to derive safe and effective embryonic stem cells from surplus IVF embryos that will otherwise be discarded and destroyed as medical waste from fertility clinics. At a press conference in Washington DC today Michael J. Fox appealed to the Senate as a Parkinson’s patient and the head of The Michael J. Fox Foundation For Parkinson’s Research. He asked the Senate to take up H.R. 810, legislation that will remove barriers from research and help advance therapies to the patients who need them. "Embryonic stem cell research holds enormous promise," said Fox... "More federal funding and more lines are needed or progress will stall." Without exception each of the Senators in participation singled out Michael J. Fox for his unwavering commitment to the Parkinson’s and stem cell research communities. His perspective on this important issue could not have been better received. Only H.R. 810, the Castle-DeGette bill that passed the U.S. House of Representatives on May 24 with 50 Republican votes, now introduced in the Senate by Senators Arlen Specter (R-PA) and Tom Harkin (D-IA), carries the true intent and spirit of the Pro-Cures Movement -- our cause.
