Has anyone developed or seen a list of language-learning strategies that
could be used with ESL students in the context of an advising session?
 
This year our Centre is encouraging ESL students to meet with a tutor
early in the semester to develop a "study plan" (similar perhaps to what
I've heard referred to as a "learning contract"??). The idea would be
for the advisor and student to talk about the student's language
learning background, their learning style, their goals etc. and then put
together an informal plan of ways the student can work on their English
during the school year. 
 
We want to move students past taking more and more grammar courses and
encourage more self-directed learning, and more focus on oral skills and
language use in context. The checklist I'm picturing might include
everything from developing a personal dictionary of discipline-specific
vocabulary to joining a campus club.
