I think it is time to bring atheists to the table. Religerants are going to be wigged out at science like the Mickey has two moms process

Pro-lifers hit out in 'virgin births' row

NICHOLAS CHRISTIAN

PRO-LIFE campaigners and church groups reacted furiously yesterday after it emerged Scots researchers had created "virgin birth" embryos.

Scientists at the Roslin Institute, Edinburgh, where Dolly the Sheep was cloned, created the UK's first embryos without using sperm or any outside genetic material.

The technique, known as parthenogenesis, Greek for "virgin birth", allows clones to be created using only the eggs donated by a woman.

By electrically stimulating the eggs, Paul De Sousa was able to kick-start the biological process that typically occurs after fertilization. He hopes the new way of creating embryos will provide an alternative to cloning as a source of embryonic stem cells for research.

Researchers at Roslin, including Professor Ian Wilmut who created Dolly the Sheep, are already trying to use stem cells to examine diseases such as motor neurone disease.

But a row erupted last night over whether the technique could be hijacked to produce cloned human babies.
