A word of warning, if you will...

Some years ago, I ran a company in Bangkok. One of my employees was an
administrative assistant named Ae. Ae's mother was dying of cancer. The
cancer had spread beyond hope of a cure and it was only a matter of time...

One day, Ae told me about a monk who had devised a potion that would
cure cancer. He claimed a number of successes. But his potion would cost
Ae about 2 month's wages. Ae asked me my opinion. I told her that if the
monk had really found a cure for cancer, did she not think that the
world would know about it and the medical establishment would be
investigating it. I suggested she should spend the money on something
else to help comfort her mother on her last days.

Ae felt that even if the odds were very long, it was better than
nothing. She bought the potion, gave it to her mother. And, of course,
her mother died of cancer not long afterwards. And Ae had spent a lot of
money and had raised her hopes on what was clearly a hopeless prospect.

Chinese medine has developed some interesting stuff. But nothing
magical. Hospitals in China operate very much like hospitals in America
or Europe or Thailand - and use the same medicines. At best Chinese
medicines might ease some symptoms. But there are no magic cures.

Instead of spending time and money chasing after such a cure, why not
spend the money on buying yourself or someone you love something
special? I expect the feel good factor there would do just as much good
as any Asian medicine you will find.
