Simply a matter of time

He said an embryo has to divide to the blastocyst stage of about 100 cells to get stem cells for sure but none of the parthenotes had reached that stage before cell division stopped. However, he thought it was simply a matter of time.

The eggs come from donors who are being sterilized. The failure rate for the parthenogenesis technique is quite high. About 300 eggs were used to produce the six parthenotes.

Although the team has stressed such an embryo would never be implanted in a uterus, critics have been quick to condemn the development.
