I don't know if you know this text or not--but it is specifically aimed at basic writers.  For that population, it has been a fairly effective book.

But yes--our rigidity follows us no matter how hard we try to change our students' minds.  I agree with Susan Drain's response about how it is often the weakest students who cannot move beyond the 5 p. theme.  Is it because they have no other lifeline for writing--writing that has been always formally judged as lacking?  And they are therefore woefully appreciate of even this small way of trying to make sense out of this?
