From an article in Slate: http://www.slate.com/id/2128361/

Summary:
In How They Do It David Plotz explains why South Korea leads the world in
stem-cell research. He argues that Koreans aren't plagued by ethical
quandaries because they "think about themselves in explicitly genetic terms"
and "are extremely open to medical self-improvement." Additionally, they
have "a generation of technicians with incredible lab skills," an immense
reverence for scientists, and a strong sense of nationalism. Plotz
emphasizes the importance of Hwang Woo-suk, the "individual genius" whose
team has come up with most of Korea's stunning advances.
