consented today to allow the measure to be postponed until next year. Lead
sponsor Sen. Arlen Specter announced on the Senate floor, "The Majority
Leader has committed to bringing it up as one of the first items next year."
The deal releases Majority Leader Bill Frist, who also favors the bill, from
a promise to hold a vote on the bill this year. Frist proposed the
postponement earlier this week as the Senate dealt with several major items
of unfinished business, including spending bills and the Miers Supreme Court
nomination.
