Instructor - Technical Communication

The Faculty of Applied Science at The University of British Columbia
invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position in
the Technical Communication Centre at the rank of Instructor I. The
appointment will commence on July 1, 2006, subject to final budgetary
approval.

Candidates must have a post-graduate degree in English, preferably at
the doctoral level, in rhetoric, composition, or the equivalent;
qualified candidates in a related field of education will also be
considered. Experience is required teaching technical communication and
helping ESL and non-ESL students alike to achieve a high level of
competency in both writing and oral presentation.

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching technical
communication to several sections of second-year engineering students
and for participating in the activities of the Technical Communication
Centre within the Faculty. The rank of Instructor implies excellence in
teaching and service to the University and community. A commitment to
creative pedagogy and the use of new digital media, together with
familiarity with WebCT, is desired. Salary will be commensurate with
qualifications and experience.

APSC 201, the second-year communication course, which has as a
prerequisite three credits in first-year university English, is designed
to introduce students to all aspects of technical writing and speaking,
including the preparation of business correspondence, instructions, and
reports. It is currently taught by two Instructors and several
Sessional Lecturers.

The Technical Communication Centre has among its objectives providing
support and assistance to students as they work to enhance their ability
to communicate effectively in English and to faculty members in the
creation of course assignments that incorporate writing opportunities.
The delivery of seminars and workshops, participation in engineering
classes and laboratories, and some one-on-one tutoring are a few of the
means employed to achieve these goals.

Interested applicants should submit a package that includes the
following: a short biography and a detailed curriculum vitae, including
a statement of career objectives; a 1-2 page summary of teaching
philosophy and interests; samples of course outlines/syllabi recently
developed or currently in use; peer and student teaching evaluations;
the names and contact details of three references.

Applications should be submitted by February 28, 2006. Please send
complete packages to
