Nobel Laureate Paul Berg, one of the 20th century's greatest scientists, tells a story about DNA: that microscopic blueprint containing the miracle of our body's design.

When DNA was first debated, the religious opponents of research talked their usual trash about how scientists were playing God, killing babies, etc.-and were almost successful in blocking it. Fortunately, they did not prevail.

But even the experts agreed DNA was so complicated that no improvements could be expected for at least fifty years.

One year later, DNA research led to the development of artificial insulin, saving the lives of countless sufferers of Juvenile Diabetes, that hideous condition which may cause blindness, and the amputation of limbs.

Seeing what a life-saving difference DNA research made, is probably part of the reason why the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) is such a leader in stem cell research advocacy today.
