     'Erroneous stem cell images sent by Schatten'  
      
     
      

      Duplicated images published with stem-cell pioneer Hwang Woo-suk's May 2005 paper in Science were originally provided by Dr. Gerald Schatten, American co-author of the article, the journal said. 

      The redundant images of stem cells went unnoticed until Monday when professor Hwang informed Science of the "unintentional error of using about four pictures redundantly," the journal said in a statement Tuesday night. 

      Hwang contacted Science two days before he entered hospital for treatment of two days before he entered hospital suffering from exhaustion and stress amid questions about his research work. 

      "The editors had requested from the corresponding author, Dr. Schatten, high resolution images for all the figures. These author-provided high resolution images were received on 10 May," Science said in its statement. 

      But the original pictures reviewed by peer scientists were not duplicated, the journal said, brushing aside accusations that Hwang's work may have flaws. 

      "There is no reason to believe at the moment that it is a problem
