In case anyone is in South Florida this month or knows someone who is
visiting.
Medicare choices and voices for Parkinson’s patients
A special program dedicated to Parkinson’s and the Medicare Rx Drug Plan
Parkinson’s disease is the second highest occurring neurodegenerative
disease in the elderly after Alzheimer’s. The primary treatment for Parkinson’s is
levodopa, an oral medication that replicates or replaces dopamine, the
neurotransmitter or chemical messenger between nerve cells, essential in making
the connection in the brain between a thought and an action. There is currently
no cure for Parkinson’s. Treatment strives to improve quality of life by
minimizing or controlling symptoms with an arsenal of medications.
WHO: A speaker from the Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders (SHINE)
program and Dr. Abraham Lieberman, a world-renowned neurologist specializing in
Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders. Dr.Stuart Isaacson, a
neurologist also specializing in Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders will join Dr.
Lieberman for the program on Friday February 3 . The programs are hosted by Take
Charge! Cure Parkinson’s, Inc., a 501(C)(3) founded in 1999, approximately 1
year after the founder’s sister, Fran Landes, was diagnosed with Parkinson’
s in her mid-forties.
WHAT: A special 2-hour program about the specific needs of the Parkinson’s
patient as it relates to Medicare Prescription Drug Plans – Part D. Learn

WHY: The arsenal of medications used throughout the course of the disease
is carefully monitored by the neurologist in partnership with the patient.
Changes in dosage and additions of new drugs are made according to the
progression and severity of symptoms of the disease. New drugs in the pipeline
hopefully will soon be released. There is also the potential for stem cells.
This is an opportunity for an overview of the Medicare Prescription Drug
Plan – Part D as it relates to Parkinson’s, a chance to ask questions and learn
of helpful resources. The presentation will provide people with Parkinson’s
with step by step instructions to determine the best plan for their needs.
Participants will be instructed on HOW TO:
    * Know what information is needed to determine which plan is best for
them
    * Use the computer to identify 2-3 best plans based on medicines and
costs
    * Work one on one with a counselor either on the phone or in person.
