One thing that is not OK is to sit on our hands, do nothing, and disallow
vital research on grounds of fear of the unknown. Such attitudes have
delayed progress in the past.

The chances that are being taken in medical research are hardly as damaging
and dangerous as the wild-west shootout going on in international relations
today. Forget the genetic freak show. We may soon be researching the
effect of nuclear war on our symptoms. If we are willing to sacrifice so
many in war, can we have no casualties whatsoever in fighting disease?
