Moral conservatives attacked by Christine Todd Whitman
      Repeatedly calls pro-lifers 'far-right extremists'

Over the weekend, Republicans opened their mail to find a letter from former New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman, who served during President Bush's first term as head of the EPA.

The letter was part of a mailing from Whitman's IMP-PAC, which stands for "It's My Party Too" and which Whitman called "a movement really," whose purpose is to turn back the pro-life base of the GOP.

In her letter, Whitman characterized moral conservatives as "far-right extremists" who've "hijack[ed]" the party and sent it heading down a "slippery slope," by opposing such things as embryonic stem-cell research.

For a contribution of $250 or more, recipients of the letter can join former President Gerald Ford, Sen. John McCain, and former Sen. Bob Dole on IMP's "Steering Committee."

      Said Whitman,

"This is your chance to become an activist for reasonable policies based on the fundamental Republican principles that address the challenges Americans face at home and around the world."

Whitman ends by reiterating that those opposed to embryonic stem-cell research are "extremists" who pose an "insidious threat" to the Republican Party.

IMP-PAC is partnered with Planned Parenthood, as well as Log Cabin Republicans, according to the IMP-PAC website.

See below for the full text of Whitman's letter.

      Governor Christine Todd Whitman

      January 6, 2006

      Dear Republican,

It is no exaggeration to say that we are at a turning point in American politics.

The Republican Party is headed down a slippery slope and if we don't do something about it soon, our "Grand Old Party" won't be grand for long.

Our party was founded on the principles of limited government, individual responsibility, free markets, fiscal responsibility, a strong national defense, and, above all else, individual freedom.

That's why it's so troubling that a small but increasingly powerful faction has decided that they alone can decide what it means to be a Republican.

For instance, they don't believe that you can support embryonic stem cell research and still be a Republican.

Just look at the political flack Senate Majority Leader (and physician) Bill Frist received from fellow Republicans when he decided to follow his conscience and support increased government funding for embryonic stem cell research.

In retaliation, the far-right extremists threatened to derail any future presidential aspirations Frist may hold, even though he votes solidly Republican on every other issue.

We can't allow a few extremists to hijack our Party, dictate our ideology, attack our moderate candidates, and alienate centrist Republicans.

That's why we created It's My Party Too PAC (IMP-PAC for short). IMP-PAC is a political action committee, a movement really, dedicated to supporting fiscally conservative, socially progressive moderate Republican candidates at all levels of government and grassroots organizations who support them.

Our vision is a Republican Party that is unified by the basic tenets of fiscal responsibility and personal freedom and allows for diverse opinions on social issues by its members.

As a notable supporter of mainstream Republican candidates and causes, you have proven yourself to be committed to our party's traditional principles of individual liberty, strong national security, and sound economic reason.

That's why we would be honored to have you on the IMP-PAC Steering Committee.

To become a member of the IMP-PAC Steering Committee, you must contribute $2000, $1000, $500, or $250.

Members of the IMP-PAC Steering Committee will provide financial support as well as insight, advice, and suggestions to our Advisory Board, which includes Former President Gerald Ford, United States Senator John McCain, and Former Senator Bob Dole.

This is your chance to become an activist for reasonable policies based on the fundamental Republican principles that address the challenges Americans face at home and around the world.

I look forward to working with you as we make our voices heard and take back our Republican Party.

      Sincerely,

      Christine Todd Whitman, Chair

P.S. The Frist fiasco was just the most recent example of how insidious a threat the far-right extremists are to our Party, our principles, and our future. Your prompt and generous support for IMP-PAC will help us take back our Republican Party.
