George For many years before she died my mom had to deal with a paralyzed anal sphincter which happened during back surgery. She did not have PD which really complicates things, but always used a rubber glove to dig it out. I take stool softeners, suppositories, and drink prune juice EVERY day for so-so results. My hands or paws seem to be getting worse so don't know what I'll do. BUT I still Have Parkinson's. I had three hernia's repaired last Tuesday. They were pretty bad. The surgeon let me go home the same day with a warning about Parkinson's and codeine, and constipation. I took twelve darvaset a day for pain. The pain was very bad anyway. I used 4 stool softeners, two doses of sorbitol, a glycerin suppository. and an enema every day. EVERY day my bowel blocked. I could feel a fecal back up at my anus. This has happened only twice before in 15 years of Parkinson's. despite the fact that I can hardly reach my anus I greased up a finger an dilated my anus manually. This worked. after scooping out balls of hard fecal mater for a while, my bowel did what it is made to do and pushed out the remaining stool. I always have trouble at stool but this has been difficult. I look forward to my usual maybe once a week bout with constipation. today the pain is much less and I have cut the codeine in half. has any one been told how to do this by a Dr? how desperate would you have to be before a nurse would do this for you at the hospital? are there any tools to make the work more easy?
