Tim, this is my email to Susan: Susan, tremor is either "intentional" (when one moves) usually as in familial or essential non-PD tremor or "resting" PD tremor. Shaking would suggest to me some degree of control either internally or externally. PD tremors and essential tremors are uncontrollable. But it is said you have essential tremor and not PD if alcohol helps. Some people with PD don't have tremors. I don't know if this is a medically sound definition, but in my view tremors are uncontrollable shaking. In PD they generally start on one side and as the disease progresses also can affect both sides of the body. Tremors drove me nuts!! It is like being shaken. DBSs helped make life bearable. When I was in neurosurgeon's office prior to my DBSs a man with essential tremor came in to have Dr. Waltz replace his battery (which had lasted 7 years) in his neurostimulator.
