There is research currently going on with other delivery methods of GDNF such as stem cells and gene therapy. But their clinical use is estimated to be years away.
There is nothing else close to this treatment that has had such positive results and is as far along in the drug development process. It has been called "a bird in the hand." GDNF by infusion might be available in a few years as an interim therapy for those who can't wait another 5-10 years for these other methods -- but Amgen holds the patent to this recombinant form of GDNF and this infusion delivery method and thus far won't continue development or release it to another company or institution that will.
