My understanding is that there are numerous studies with this
result and that the conclusion is well accepted.  I personally
agree with you that people who are addicted to smoking, alcohol,
etc. likely have a personality type that is less likely to result
in PD.  However, there are investigators who are performing
research into the chemical components of tobacco smoke, looking
for neuroprotective agents.  I am skeptical, but I wish them
every success.

My point above, though, is that when you do a study of this sort,
looking at differing rates of occurrence of some endpoint as a
function of some exposure, you need to adjust for other variables
that may affect the outcome of interest.
