Ray,
Thank you. Following are excerpts from a letter e-mailed to me over Sen. Frist's name and dated July 12. I think it is of particular importance because of the last paragraph, that we stress when calling or writing, that our interest is in having HR 810 passed, with no additions and no amendments.

"Thank you for contacting me regarding stem cell research. It is an honor to serve you as Majority Leader of the United States Senate.

"Stem cell research holds great promise to alleviate suffering from diseases such as Parkinson's and diabetes. Both embryonic and non-embryonic stem cells, such as those found in bone marrow, skin cells, and cord blood have great potential to cure illness. As you may know, embryonic stem cells are uniquely promising because of their ability to become any type of tissue and to continually regenerate.

"In 2001, President Bush became the first President to fund embryonic stem cell research. Over time, however, the limits put in place on federal funding will slow our ability to make progress and find cures. Therefore, I believe current federal policy should be expanded, yet consistent with a comprehensive set of ethical criteria I first outlined over four years ago. As a result, stem cell research should be conducted only within a highly regulated, transparent system of ethical and moral oversight. Within such a system, a limited number of stem cells would be derived from embryos that would otherwise be discarded or destroyed."
