This is what the Science Magazine report on claims made by David
Prentice for adult stem cell treatments said about treatment for PD.
Two of the studies cited by Prentice were on GDNF (infusion delivery)
clinical trials and had nothing to do with adult stem cells.A link to
the full report from Science Magazine is available thru the
grassroots connection web site (www.grassrootsconnection.com)

Disease :Parkinson’s Disease

Is FDA Approved treatment using adult stem cells generally
available? NO

Actual nature of the study or studies cited by Prentice:
One abstract from a 2002 scientific meeting
reported clinical experience with one
Parkinson’s patient who received a transplant
of his own brain stem cells (129). Two
references reported Congressional testimony
by the author of the above abstract and the
transplanted patient. The testimony was
given before Senator Sam Brownback’s
Science, Technology and Space
Subcommittee on July 14, 2004 and does not
contain sufficient information to assess the
claims made (130, 131). Two additional
references cited irrelevant papers that do not
address a cell-based therapy of any kind for
Parkinson’s (132, 133).

Additional comments:
While transplants of cells from various sources
have been tried on an experimental basis
Parkinson’s disease, the clinical outcomes
these attempts have been mixed, with a more
recent trial indicating that a fetal cell transplant
confers no treatment benefit (134, 135).
Neither the published scientific literature
the cited papers support the claim that an
effective stem cell therapy is available to
Parkinson’s patients.

Thanks to Linda Herman and Bob Johnson I got a chance to read the
evaluations of the list "cures" by the 3 scientists.

Although some of the adult stem cells in question are from umbilical
cords, many were from bone marrow transplants (which is nothing new)
as an adjunct to chemo which made more chemo and remissions
possible. Despite this, death was often the ultimate victor.
Testicular, ovarian and breast cancer are not being treated and cured
by ASCs, in fact there were temporary impovements which patients
experience anyway and remissions wiih a few patients similar to
Turner. Turner's PD condition in 2004 at the Brownback hearing with
the 2 spinal cord injury ladies were not deemed cures either and
were, of course not up-to-date. The 9 effective treatments were for
leukemias and rare blood disorders, I believe.
