Job Description: The Bob Gillespie Academic Skills Centre at the
University of Toronto at Mississauga invites applications for a start
date of January 2, 2007, or July 1, 2007, for the position of full time
Lecturer in Science Education to establish and deliver programs of
instructional support for students and faculty in the sciences and
mathematics.

We seek candidates with completed PH.D or equivalent with expertise in
the field of Science Education at the university level to establish and
deliver programs of instructional support for students and faculty;
experience in instructional design, assessment, and delivery of academic
support to undergraduate students will be essential components of this
position.

The successful candidate responsibilities will include: teaching
science-based reading, thinking, math, and writing strategies in
one-on-one, small group and classroom settings to undergraduate and
graduate students; collaborating with faculty colleagues to integrate
these skills into their courses; teaching undergraduate and graduate
teaching assistants and undergraduate peer learning assistants to help
students formulate strategies for studying in the Sciences and Math, to
assess scientific writing and communicate the principles of effective
writing to their peers; facilitating students’ abilities to deploy
thinking strategies appropriate to their learning needs; conducting
innovative and original research and contributing to the literature on
best practices in Science Education and transitional issues in
First-Year Science and Mathematics courses; and contributing to the
ongoing administration of the centre, including contributing to the
ongoing assessment of the units programs and activities. The successful
candidate will work in collaboration with the appropriate academic
departments, the Library’s instructional technologists and other
academic partners.

Qualifications: A completed PhD or equivalent. Qualified candidates will
have at least three years experience teaching science-based reading,
thinking, math and writing skills at the university. He/she will have
experience in instructional design; assessing science-focused reading,
thinking and writing; training TAs and peer assistants; and using
instructional technologies appropriately and creatively. He/she will
have taught at the university level and possess a good knowledge of best
practices in science education and demonstrated excellence in teaching.
He/she will have coordinated and supervised high performing teams in
complex, evolving educational situations. The incumbent will have proven
excellent presentation skills in high performance academic environments.
Preference will be given to candidates with peer-reviewed publications
in the area of teaching and learning in the sciences and math.

The appointment is initially for a period of 12 months with a
possibility of renewal and the ultimate possibility of a continuing
appointment.

The incumbent will be appointed to The Bob Gillespie Academic Skills
Centre.
