Veto will condemn many who research might have helped

The president used his first veto to deny federal funding for new stem-cell
lines to no one's surprise.
I'm getting weary of the photo-ops with a beaming president surrounded by
cute babies who would not be here, had it not been for science and previous
embryonic research.
But, where are the people with Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and diabetes in
these happy scenarios? It doesn't play as well to include people who are
having their deaths hastened by his actions.
It is never mentioned that 90% of the embryos will be destroyed, but it is
always pointed out that you can "will" your unused embryo to other couples
by simply signing a piece of paper.
Now, this is tricky, but even our president can probably handle this. Folks
who don't support such research can sign another piece of paper denying
permission to have their embryo used. Case closed.
Well, not quite. Thousands of people will have to needlessly suffer and die
premature deaths so a minority in this country can go to bed tonight secure
in their religious convictions.
Sleep well.
