The House of Representatives and the Senate have completed their versions of the Defense funding bill for next year. The House allocated $26.5 million for Parkinsonâ ™s research at the Defense Departmentâ ™s Neurotoxin Exposure Treatment Research Program (NETRP). However, the Senate bill does not provide ANY funding for critical NETRP Parkinsonâ ™s disease research. We need your House and Senate Members to protect both the programâ ™s funding and its original purpose by signing onto the NETRP Dear Colleague being circulated by the Congressional Working Group and Caucus on Parkinsonâ ™s Disease. The next step in the funding process is for House and Senate Defense subcommittee members to meet in Conference Committee to work out the differences between the two versions of the bill. The Conference Committee will decide if NETRP receives $26.5 million, as provided by the House, or if the program will be eliminated based on the Senate-passed bill. This Conference Committee is expected to meet as early as September 5th, 2007. In addition to funding concerns, we are worried about a misguided attempt to change the focus of the NETRP from Parkinsonâ ™s to ALS research. We must let our Congressional champions know that this request would in effect be a raid on our long-standing and successful Parkinsonâ ™s Department of Defense program. The Congressional Caucus and Working Group on Parkinson's Disease have worked every year for the last ten years to fund this innovative Parkinson's research program, and, every year, the Parkinsonâ ™s community has supported their efforts. The Dear Colleague asks the Conference Committee to provide $26.5 million for the NETRP to continue funding innovative Parkinsonâ ™s research. In addition, the Dear Colleague confirms the Parkinsonâ ™s focus of the program, which, since Fiscal 1997, has been to study neurodegenerative mechanisms and treatments with a special emphasis on Parkinson's disease. We need your Membersâ ™ support now more than ever. Signing onto the Dear Colleague is the best way for your Member of Congress to show his or her support for the NETRP and help protect this essential Parkinsonâ ™s program. --- If you no longer wish to receive e-mail from us, please visit http://capwiz.com/pan/lmx/u/?jobid=74401277&queueid=846058106. ----------------------- Headers -------------------------------- Return-Path: <[log in to unmask]> Received: from rly-xl03.mx.aol.com (rly-xl03.mail.aol.com [172.20.83.52]) by air-xl03.mail.aol.com (v112.5) with ESMTP id MAILINXL33-5c444ef1d97167; Fri, 25 Aug 2006 11:56:22 -0400 Received: from outbound.mailmanager.net (outbound.mailmanager.net [64.14.114.206]) by rly-xl03.mx.aol.com (v112.5) with ESMTP id MAILRELAYINXL36-5c444ef1d97167; Fri, 25 Aug 2006 11:56:07 -0400 Received: from mail.mailmanager.net (mail.mailmanager.net [64.14.114.217]) by outbound.mailmanager.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id 51109351F8 ; Fri, 25 Aug 2006 11:56:12 -0400 (EDT) Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="-=-XCbound-1156521262" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: /capad/tools/lm-runner 0.21 X-CWDir: pan X-CWMsg: 74401277 X-CWRecip: 4483682 X-CWQueue: 846058106 Subject: URGENT Help Needed to Save =?ISO-8859-1?Q?Parkinson=92s?= Research Program Reply-To: "Andrea Browning" <[log in to unmask]> Message-Id: <[log in to unmask]> Date: Fri, 25 Aug 2006 11:56:12 -0400 (EDT) X-AOL-IP: 64.14.114.206 X-AOL-SCOLL-SCORE: 1:2:433775575:10468982 X-AOL-SCOLL-URL_COUNT: 2 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off Parkinsn send a message to: mailto:[log in to unmask] In the body of the message put: signoff parkinsn
