Call for Papers: Performance, Religion, and Social Agency

ATHE (The Association of Theatre in Higher Education), 2007

ATHE's presence in New Orleans next year begs the question: what is
the Academy's role in a devastated city that has become, for many, a
symbol of racial inequality, U.S. government corruption, and cynical
political staginess, as well as a platform for social activism and
eschatological discourse? This panel seeks work that investigates
intersections of performance, spirituality, and social agency, and is
interested in selecting papers with interdisciplinary focus that
represent a wide range of time periods, geographies, performance
styles, and ritual practices. Both historical and theoretical essays
are welcome.

Possible issues these papers might address include:

How do theatrical traditions borrow from ritual practices in order to
facilitate social activism, and vice versa?
Does a performance in a sacred setting disguise worldly discourse? Or
does a religious forum somehow elevate such discourse?
Can mimesis contribute to socio-spiritual events and how does lived
representation contribute to the actualization of teleologies and
other "truths"?
Can theatrical theories and styles be used to analyze the efficacy of
spiritual practice?
In what ways has the sacralization of the Academy itself alienated
scholarly writing from larger social fields and stages of power?

Papers should be 20 minutes long and read in English. Please send the
title of your proposed paper with a 200-word abstract (as Word
attachment), with affiliation and contact details, to Christopher
Swift at [log in to unmask] by October 1. Please include any AV
requests with your abstract. Feel free to email Chris if you have any
questions.
