Jerrold Vitek is the neurologist at Cleveland Clinic. He recently left Emory University, where he was a pioneer in the reintroduction of the pallidotomy with micro-electrode guided mapping of the brain. I know him on several levels. First of all, he was the key player along with neurosurgeon Roy Bakay in my pallidotomy and DBS.. Secondly, I worked by his side for over 4 years assisting in more than 125 pallidotomy and DBS cases. Thirdly, he is a close personal friend, a highly compassionate as well as skilled neurologist. He is extremely articulate in his ability to explain procedures so that the most uninformed can understand. I have not met his partner, the neurosurgeon on his team. I do know that he will settle for nothing less than the very best. While I agree that finding the best surgeon is crucial, I believe that if you have found the best neurologist for the job, then most likely the neurosurgeon working with him will be of the same caliber. In simple terms, the surgeon is the pilot but the neurologist is the navigator. In brain surgery, I like the confidence of knowing the pilot is going in the right direction. A mere millimeter off in calculations can mean everything!
